ABOUTTHEPOSITION
This is second level supervisory correctional work directing, through subordinate Correctional Sergeants, the activities of a large correctional force engaged in overseeing the custody of inmates in a correctional institution with responsibility for the maintenance of security and order. Contact with inmates, prison staff, medical, education and social service professionals in the institution is a significant aspect of the work in ensuring a safe and secure facility in accordance with Prison rules and regulations and court mandates. Employees in this class assume full responsibility for an institution in the absence of superiors during an assigned shift, holiday and/or weekend duty coverage. Work involves regular exposure to unpredictable conditions which can arise in correctional institutions. Work is performed under the general supervision of a correctional superior.

Minimum Requirements
Minimum Training, Education & Experience
The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Candidates must meet requirements within 30 days after the last date for filing applications.
1. CIVILSERVICESTATUS:
Presently employed by the City of Philadelphia with permanent Civil Service status in the Department of Prisons with a performance rating of Satisfactory or higher.

2. EDUCATION: Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.
AND
3. GENERALEXPERIENCE: Two years of experience guarding inmates in a correctional institution.
AND
4. SPECIFICEXPERIENCE: One year of experience supervising the activities of correctional officers.
Physical & Medical Requirements
Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
Required Licenses & Certifications
Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator’s license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Correctional Lieutenant as required by work assignment.

ELIGIBLELIST: DEPARTMENTAL–ONLYPROMOTIONAL
Only a departmental promotional eligible list for the PDP will be established as a result of the examination.
PERIODICELIGIBLELIST
The examination for this class is announced on a periodic basis. The eligible list established as a result will be merged as candidates are tested.
Candidates who passed a periodic or continuous examination may not apply for the same examination as long as the candidate’s name remains on the eligible list. Candidates who fail or those who pass and whose names are subsequently removed from the eligible list for a continuous or periodic examination may apply for the examination again 180 days following the last date on which the candidate took the examination. If a candidate takes an examination sooner, the candidate will be considered examined in error. The candidate’s test papers will not be scored.
Any person who did not appear to take this examination after being notified to appear may re-apply for the same examination now. If you think that you are eligible to apply because you either failed the examination or did not appear to take the examination and you were unsuccessful in your attempt to apply for this examination, please contact the staff member named at the end of the announcement for assistance.
Candidates who pass the exam and are placed on the civil service list will be retained on the list for a minimum of one year and a maximum of two years after the establishment of the Eligible List.
PREFERENCEFORPHILADELPHIARESIDENTS
Candidates who have maintained a bona fide residence in Philadelphia for at least one year prior to the date of the civil service examination shall have priority over all other persons receiving an identical test score. If you have maintained a bona fide residence in Philadelphia for at least one year immediately preceding December 8, 2024, you are eligible to claim residency preference.
To receive such preference, candidates must respond to the question regarding residence later in this form.
The response on this application will be used to determine eligibility for preference for residents. Documentation of residence may be required if there is any question as to whether you meet the residency preference requirements.
If an applicant does not respond to the appropriate residence question, it will be assumed that the applicant does not qualify for residence preference. Eligibility for residence preference must be determined by the date of the test administration. No requests for residence preference will be granted after the test administration.
Projected Exam Date
This Computer Based Written examination is scheduled for January 11, 2025. Please note that this examination date is subject to change.
Candidates will need access to a desktop computer or laptop with a webcam and internet access in order to take the written examination. Candidates will need to be able to operate computerized software proficiently and independently.

Test Review
